Your oral surgeon will need to thoroughly examine your mouth and jaw at the beginning of the dental implant process. If they are able to confirm that there aren’t any problems, they can move forward with the surgery. But in some cases, they might determine that you will need to have a couple of procedures performed to make sure that you can have implants placed. Here are 3 preliminary procedures that you might need before the gaps in your grin can be filled.
1. Tooth Extractions
Sometimes the tooth that needs to be replaced is still in the mouth. If that’s the case, then an extraction is the logical first step to having a dental implant placed. You might need to have one tooth or multiple teeth removed based on the circumstances.
Some tooth extractions are simple while others are surgical. The kind you need depends on the state of the tooth being replaced. Your oral surgeon can give you a step-by-step breakdown of the process during your initial consultation.
2. Bone Grafting
Bone loss is a common obstacle when it comes to having dental implants placed. The bone in your jaw will start to be resorbed after tooth loss; eventually, there may not be enough bone for dental implant surgery. Fortunately, the lost bone tissue can often be restored with bone grafting.
To carry out a bone grafting procedure, your oral surgeon will first need to open your gums. They will then apply new bone tissue to the affected area. (Said tissue might come from your own body or a donor.) You’ll then have to wait a few months for your mouth to heal. Once your jaw is strong enough, you’ll be ready to receive your dental implants.
3. Sinus Lift
Sinus lifts are generally only necessary if you’re having implants placed in your upper jaw where the molars are normally located. Your oral surgeon might find that your sinus cavity is too close to the intended implant site. By performing a sinus lift, they can ensure that your implant can be placed without damaging your sinuses.
This treatment involves gently raising the sinus cavity and applying grafting material to the space under it. Once your mouth has fully healed, there will be plenty of bone for dental implant surgery, and the sinuses will be safely out of the way.
You will be told if you need preliminary treatments performed during your initial dental implant consultation. Don’t hesitate to speak up if you have questions about the treatments being suggested.
